Art Basel will postpone its annual June fair due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 edition will now take place at Messe Basel from September 17 to 20, with preview days on September 15 and 16.

Marc Spiegler, Global Director of Art Basel, explained the decision was made in consultation with gallerists, collectors, partners and external experts, to protect the health and safety of the art community, and to ensure maximum global attendance.

"We thank our galleries for the support and understanding of the complex decision to postpone the fair. We hope the situation improves swiftly, and we will work closely with our exhibitors to deliver a successful fair in September."

In the interim, Art Basel will continue to invest in its new digital platform – the Online Viewing Rooms – as a way to support galleries. It will share more details about this in the coming weeks.

Founded in 1970 by gallerists from Basel, Art Basel today stages art shows for modern and contemporary art, sited in Basel, Miami Beach, and Hong Kong. For more, visit
