German Taiwanese designer Beatrix Li-Chin Loos uses leftovers to create her beautiful, eco-friendly pieces
For some designers it’s pretty much a straight line from university to production. But this was not the case for Beatrix Li-Chin Loos, who first decided to study science and environmental policy at Carl-von-Ossiezky University in Oldenburg, Germany. A passionate environmentalist, Loos says she has always been attracted to creating beautiful things. Often feeling torn between her two loves – ecology and creative/artistic work, Loos tried her hand at both. After working in the Parisian fashion industry for several years however she tried something in the other direction and moved on to work with various environmental organizations, but found something was still lacking.
Deciding to go back to school, Loos studied cabinet making at Ecole Boulle in Paris, and although she only ended up making one coffee table, she was finally heading in the right direction. However, it was only after graduation when she left Paris and moved to the South of France that she discovered scraps, and as it were, her calling in life. Using leftover pieces of Oak wood discarded by a local joinery she created Chut ! de bois, her first collection that was shown at the design expo, Parcours du Design, in Strasbourg, France, 2009.
Predominately working with wood and other sustainable materials like glass and leather her work carries a strong environmental message which allows Loos to combine her love of creating with her desire to contribute to the environmental movement. And we’re certainly glad she did. Her creations may be small, but have a sense of understated elegance and simplicity that is all the more impressive when you consider what they once were. Not that Loos wants you to see it that way.
Talking about her work she says it “often shows a contrast between raw and refined materials which creates a new aesthetic balance. I also like to superpose layers and to mix different materials to create new graphic patterns. The whole collection is realised with scraps, but I prefer that they are not recognized as such. I insist on perfect finishing.”
