MAISON&OBJET is a mixed trade show focusing on home decor and design, connecting lifestyle creatives from across the globe and covering home accessories, interior design, architecture and other aspects of lifestyle. It is the first major design event of the year, and is followed by another edition in September. The event comes with a new layout where attendees can explore four Maison sectors – Craft; Metiers d'Art; Unique & Eclectic; Today and Forever, with offerings from leading names and emerging brands, while the seven sectors in the Object section covers decorative accessories. The fair also hosts a series of events and programmes including trend forums, conferences and workshops. This year's Designer of the Year Sebastian Herkner will be honoured with a curated talk, while the Rising Talent Awards will recognise young designers from China, including Frank Chou and Mario Tsai.

Held biannually in Denmark for 34 years, Formland is Scandinavia's largest home accessories and gift fair dedicated to the latest in Nordic design. Held in spring and the autumn, it focuses on lighting, sustainable products, garden and outdoor, textiles, wellness, kitchen and tableware, home accessories and shop furniture. The new Trend Zone, which has the theme 'A Kind of Nature', takes the natural world as its inspiration and examines colours, materials, patterns and form.

Ambiente is a leading international trade fair and one of the world's most important consumer goods exhibitions. A show for the entire industry, the fair presents a wide spectrum of products associated with dining, cooking, household, furnishings and ornaments, interior design, gifts, jewellery and fashion accessories, and offers a glimpse of the latest trends, technology and innovations in the consumer goods sector. The 2018 show featured 4,376 exhibitors across 12 halls at Messe Frankfurt's own exhibition grounds, and attracted 134,600 trade visitors from 168 countries over five days. The fair offers a range of events and programmes that includes the German Design Award; Talents, a showcase of work from 36 up-and-coming designers from 18 countries; and Solutions, which focuses on innovative kitchen and home gadgets. India is the partner country this year and has its own show to promote its various creative industries.

Launched in 2002, Stockholm Design Week has established itself as the premium Scandinavian design event, catering to architects, designers, buyers and thought-leaders from around the globe. More than 200 events will be held across the Swedish capital, with the Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair (February 5-9) – a sister event – being one of the highlights. Shanghai-based design duo Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu of design practice Neri&Hu – judges at the A&D China Awards 2018 – will be guests of honour and will create their own exhibition at the main entrance of the fair. The Stockholm Design & Architecture Talks host some 100 guest speakers for keynote discussions; big names include Tom Dixon, Joel Sanders and Neri&Hu. An event magazine serves as both guide and thought-provoker.

March is Hong Kong's 'art month' and has been since Art Basel Hong Kong moved from May in 2015. A cluster of art-related satellite events and exhibitions have followed, securing the city's status as the art hub of Asia. The 2018 edition of Art Basel featured nearly 250 galleries from 32 countries, and will continue to feature a wide range of works this year under several themed sections: Galleries, Insights, Kabinett and Encounters.

Art Central, in its fifth edition, will feature more than 100 galleries, most from the Asia-Pacific region and with a focus on modern and contemporary art. Also in March is the spring edition of the Asia Contemporary Art Show, its 14th spring edition, featuring 2,500 works available for immediate purchase.Photo: Jacquie Manning

ISH is the world's leading trade fair for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC), as well as water-management systems, and is held every two years in Frankfurt. An extensive range of products and services will be on display, as well as innovative technical solutions for key challenges in the industry. Apart from the Energy and Water sections, a large section is devoted to 12 colour trends for the bathroom, to be showcased as part of the Pop up my Bathroom trend show.

Just five years old, Design Shanghai lays claim to being Asia's biggest design event. It features more than 400 leading international and Chinese brands, galleries and designers across a series of themed halls: Contemporary, Classic & Luxury, Collectibles, Kitchen & Bathroom and Workplace; along with the New Materials and Applications section. The event will host more 1,000 product launches and seminars, the China Design Trends Gallery, and the first Kelly Hoppen International Design Awards that recognise the best in interior design across China.

Regarded as the most important event in the design world, Milan Design Week has origins dating back to 1961 when the city staged the first Salone Internazionale del Mobile (Milan Furniture Fair), which now boasts more than 1,300 exhibitors. The fair has become an annual celebration of all things design-related in a weeklong, multi-venue congregation of wonders; it is also the best place to spot the latest trends. The furniture fair's satellite events are collectively known as Fuorisalone. In its 58th edition this year, the week comprises a host of exhibitions, including International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition, the biennial Euroluce International Lighting Exhibition, Workplace3.0 (also biennial) and SaloneSatellite. Other events include popups, presentations, special openings, site-specific installations and exhibitions, including Ventura Central.

Organised by Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the HKTDC Lighting Fair has spring (April) and autumn (October) editions. Each four-day event is a strong trading platform with thematic product-based zones such as Smart Lighting & Solutions, Horticultural Lighting, Residential Lighting and Commercial Lighting, drawing more than 20,000 buyers from around the world. A new zone, Innobuild, will introduce new green technology and other innovations. Forums and seminars are also held on the latest lighting technologies and outlook for the industry.

Perspective's 40 Under 40 Awards programme is now in its 13th consecutive year, and recognises 40 young design talents from the fields of art, architecture, interior design and product design who will lead the future of design in Asia-Pacific. Once again, this year's event will be held at The Annex event space in Sheung Wan. Following the success of previous years, a design forum will also be held. This year's theme and speakers will be announced soon.

Kitchen and Bath China (KBC) is Asia's leading kitchen and bathroom trade show, held annually in Shanghai and now in its 24th year. One of Asia's most influential shows, it covers several sectors including Built-in Kitchens, Kitchen Furniture, Sanitary Equipment, and Valves and Fittings. More than 5,662 exhibitors, including market leaders from China and overseas, launched their latest products, technologies and solutions at KBC 2017.

The festival returns in 2019 with a lively and diverse programme of public events across London exploring the theme of Boundaries. The festival began in 2004, and is now the world's largest annual architecture festival – attracting some 600,000 people in 2018. The majority of events during this month-long festival are free.

A city-wide celebration of all things design that takes place every September, the London Design Festival features the hottest trends and is attended by creatives from the British capital and beyond. First conceived in 2003, the yearly affair includes satellite events around town, including the much-anticipated London Design Fair. The festival's hub, the Victoria and Albert Museum, celebrated its 10th year of collaboration with the festival in 2018 and remains its main venue, hosting a selection of talks, tours and workshops, as well as special installations and displays. A highlight from last year was the Please Feed the Lions installation by Es Devlin, a large orange lion sculpture placed in Trafalgar Square that projected LED lines of poetry from its mouth.

The Italian city of Bologna celebrates its avant-garde ceramic, tile and bathroom designs nearly as much as its cuisine. Cersaie is held yearly at the end of September, and last year featured more than 900 exhibitors from 35 countries. Although first positioned as a trade event, recent editions have proved that the exposition offers plenty of aesthetic appeal. The tiles, with their blank surfaces, are not unlike a painters' canvas, allowing for boundless creativity and designs, with a good dose of Mediterranean inspiration.

The first iteration of Design China Beijing was launched at Beijing Design Week in 2018. Sharing the same format as its Shanghai counterpart, the fair consists of five design sections: Contemporary, Classic and Luxury, Collectibles, Kitchen and Bathroom, and Workplace design, and is attended by both domestic and iconic international brands, showcasing the latest in furniture, lighting, textiles and materials design, as well as a number of conceptual installations.

Dutch Design Week (DDW) is the biggest design affair in Northern Europe. Staged annually in Eindhoven, this nine-day event is filled with exhibitions, workshops, seminars and festivities in more than 100 locations across the city. Focusing on designs for a sustainable future, DDW sets itself apart from other design events in the world with an emphasis on experiment, innovation and crossovers. It also showcases the country's emerging design talent through collaborations with various educational institutions including the Design Academy Eindhoven and the Faculty of Industrial Design at the Eindhoven University of Technology.

Environmental protection is firmly on the agenda and demand for sustainable living practices is driving demand for innovative products. Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the Eco Expo Asia annual trade fair focuses on sustainability and has proven to be highly popular. Manufacturers and suppliers of environmental goods and services gather under one roof, displaying the newest technologies in waste and water recycling, renewable energy, air- and water-quality control, green-building methods and environmentally friendly products. The Eco Asia Conference, which runs concurrently with the fair, features lectures, panel discussions and seminars on various topics, trends and best practices.

Design Week Mexico celebrated its tenth edition last year. The influential event puts Mexican design and architecture in the spotlight through a programme of diverse encounter platforms for the creative community, and involves key figures from the cultural, commercial and institutional sectors. Perspective's flagship event, the annual A&D Trophy Awards, has been honouring excellence in architecture, interior and product design across the Asia-Pacific region since 2004. The 2018 edition received a record number of entries and was attended by more than 300 guests, including shortlisted award winners, judges, architects and interior designers, as well as officials from leading local architecture and design associations. Following the success of the Hong Kong edition, Perspective's A&D China Awards debuted in Shenzhen last November, shining the spotlight on leading creatives in Greater China.

The Shanghai edition of the Milan furniture show will return for its fourth edition this year, with a vision to bring Italian style and know-how to a Chinese audience. In its 2018 edition, the show featured 123 Italian brands that attracted more than 20,000 visitors. Educational and cultural programmes are also on offer for those interested to know more about the development of the design industry in China and beyond, including master classes by renowned Italian architects, as well as design talks led by key industry figures. Salone Satellite Shanghai, its concurrent event, acts as a platform for young Chinese designers and explores topics such as the relationship between heritage and modernity, and technology and craftsmanship.

Since 2015, Dubai has hosted the annual Dubai Design Week, the region's largest festival of its kind. Established by Art Dubai Group in partnership with the people behind the Dubai Design District, the show is held every November with events scattered around the city, showcasing the best from regional forward-thinkers. There are also forums, keynote sessions and panels that discuss the future of the industry, with a focus on sustainability. Dubbed "the global forum for design", Design Miami and its sister show Design Basel (held in June in Basel, Switzerland), bring together the world's most prolific art collectors, curators and designers. It features a mixed bag of events, exhibitions, galleries and shows against a backdrop of sunshine and glamour. In addition to being a respected marketplace for design products, Design Miami, held annually alongside the Art Basel fairs during Miami Art Week, features museum-quality exhibitions of modern furniture, lighting and products created by some of the biggest names in the business. It also offers a series of cultural programmes, panels, and lectures that connect industry veterans with design institutions.
Early December

Following a star-studded line-up of award-winning and world-renowned designers, Business of Design Week will return to Hong Kong at the end of the year with the United Kingdom as its partnering country, and will attract plenty of key industry players, including Thomas Heatherwick. Its partner event, DesignInspire, is an international exhibition celebrating creativity. Last year's edition focused on the co-creation of a happy city with good design, inviting creators to present their works and discuss topics across themes of architecture and interior, product and industrial design.
The year wraps up with the world's largest global architectural awards programme and festival. A landmark event for the world's architecture community, WAF is the only event where shortlisted architects present their projects live to their peers in crit rooms, while more than 500 finalists compete for prestigious awards. At the previous edition of WAF, Singapore's Kampung Admiralty, a mixed-use, plant-covered building by WOHA, took home the World Building of the Year award.
