Renowned Dutch designer Marcel Wanders creates an imaginary and whimsical universe for French furniture maker Roche Bobois

The Globe Trotter collection, introduced at Milan Design Week last year, is Marcel Wanders and Roche Bobois latest collaboration between the furniture brand and Dutch designer known best for his fun and audacious design. This eclectic home furniture range inspired by the golden age of exploration reflects elements of nature and cosmopolitan cultures, and each piece has a story to tell.

"The idea was not to make a chair or a table, but to make a universe," says Wanders of his approach. "I asked the team to bring things they like – drawings, twigs, flowers… all kinds of stuff. All these things collected was the start of our world." Also integrated into the designs are motifs that Wanders gathered during his journeys to London, Paris and Istanbul, in addition to elements inspired by their history and culture.Marcel Wanders and Roche Bobois collaboration

Among those receiving tribute are the Montgolfier brothers, inventors of the hot-air balloon – a silhouette notable throughout the collection – with the plump sofa named Montgolfiere and the balloon-shaped Up lamp.

Featuring a delicate mix of colours, layers, textures, materials and graphics, the seasoned collection also includes pieces such as the Wonder cabinet and sideboard with screen-printed graphics interior; the Dojo bookcase influenced by Japanese temples; the La Parisienne tables with legs dressed in fishnet stockings; the Operette padded chair with motifs representing the three stopovers; the Mariposa lamp inspired bybutterflies; and the Abanico screens and tufted rugs that take London, Istanbul or Paris as their theme.2018_1_CHESS_tables_basses_fixes_5_det_hdc_ht
