Project Stalactite
Product category Lighting
Project leader Teddy Lo
Stalactite is both lighting luminaire and technology, combining product design with real-time information acquisition from an inbuilt driver to provide designed video and motion graphics. An interactive system integrating LED technology to create a volumetric screen, Stalactite’s rectangular 3D display can be used for commercial applications, showroom displays and advertising.
The installation, which resembles the shape of a stalactite, creates a matrix of dripstone grid, creating an interesting volume of poles overhead in the form of a chandelier. Consisting of custom-made LED light strips, the cover is made of polycarbonate tubes treated with a chromic acid anodising process to provide a reflective yet translucent visual effect. This special finish – its 60% transparency – contributes to cost savings in high power LED installations.
Stalactite consists of 260 pieces of dripstone, each with seven colour-changing LEDs. By using total of 1,820 pixels, eye-catching and colourful lighting scenarios can be created. The Stalactite 3D Display comes with an easy-to-use motion graphic system which allows the import of video files to be displayed within the spatial region and enables designers or animators to create shapes and 3D video content for the volumetric screen. It also allows for external video cameras to be plugged in, displaying real-time data in true 3D format.
Stalactite was designed to break away from the hardware orientated, industrial look of other volumetric display products. More than just a hi-tech engineering project, it is also a light sculpture.

Company Index Architecture
Project Life With(in) A Box
Project designers Index Architecture
An all-in-one, multi-purpose cabinet described as a ‘living-machine’, catering to the needs of the resident in each room of the serviced apartment, measuring 20 sq-m on average. This ‘machine’, dimensioned precisely to provide for all the daily needs and electrical appliances for a single individual, can be boxed up, moved and relocated to anywhere in the world as a piece of cabinetry. In this instance, architecture and product design merged to bypass cultural, social and economical boundaries, reacting to context and limitations in the most direct way.

Project Gradient Furniture
Project designer Danny Fang
The Gradient collection is a set of all-weather wicker chairs that is a contemporary interpretation of traditional wickerwork. It is a showcase of the unique quality of the age-old craft of wicker weaving, through a visually distinctive handwoven pattern. The wicker weave is the main focus of the collection and the chairs are designed as a vehicle to optimally display the weave. The gradation of colour transforms the traditional material into a modern and sophisticated product, bringing relevancy to wickerwork in the context of contemporary design.

Project Geppetto chair
Project leader Danny Fang
Geppetto is a polycarbonate chair inspired by the ingenuity of China’s Ming dynasty furniture. It fuses the elegant form of a classic Ming chair and the pragmatic sensibilities of contemporary design. The result is a lightweight, stackable and weather-resistant armchair that pays homage to traditional Chinese aesthetics. Ming furniture is made from a single type of material without any adhesives or nails. The Geppetto, made of one piece of polycarbonate, draws an ironic parallel. Modern technology also allows the curves of a Ming chair to be rendered in a split second.

Project The Narcissist
Project leaders Lyndon Neri, Rossana Hu
The Narcissist is a collection of objects for the use of dressing and personal grooming. The collection includes the Tocador and stool set, the Dowery jewellery box and a wall mirror. All three pieces utilise different applications and implications of crystals, while all three usages emphasise the obscure quality of crystals, meant to be a subversive critique of crystal’s intrinsic attractive visual quality.
