Project Treeum, a house for masonry wall trees
Project leaders Frankie, Wong Shun Yin
Treeum aims to preserve Wanchai’s heritage, both natural and manmade. With its focus on Hong Kong’s unique masonry wall trees, the proposal makes use of existing structures while also becoming part of the district’s ‘heritage route’ walk. The renovation of an abandoned site near the Hopewell Centre results in a useful open space and gallery for visitors to explore. The site’s 500 old trees and 12 masonry wall trees make up a vital ‘green lung’ for the congested Wanchai district as well. This textures of the concrete walls with the root surfaces, erosion-moulded concrete balustrades, chips of ceramic tiles and stone bricks also inspired the use of varying materials in the construction of Treeum.

Along this add-on 13km, tram space (18 sq-m each) become spatial interfaces to engage with site context, community and culture, to become a moving stage, garden, booth, etcetera.

Project Taste of Life with Rebuilt – A cooking resort
Located on Mo Tat Old Village on Lantau island, “rebuild” is the design concept of this project, aiming to bridge the broken relationship between people and the natural environment, and among families and friends. Rebuilding and reconstructing the existing village houses into a unified and modern resort symbolises this hidden meaning and with the provision of various platforms for cooking, sharing and dining, users can regain the enjoyment brought by the most primitive activity of cooking.
