The palette is restrained, with the use of bamboo, lacquered panels to create an oriental sensitivity, yet the flavour of the scheme, when viewed in its entirety, remains international. Project designer Katsuki Higashi
Kenma is upcoming kimono artist Jotaro Saito’s first concept store. His kimono designs are famed for their combination of luxury and modernity, and he has also expanded his scope into interior materials, artwork, furniture, bags and so on. The shop, Kenma by Jotaro Saito, makes use of tradition while creating new world to match with the artist’s concept of creation.
A theme of ‘lines’, representing the warp and weft of weaving, expresses itself in the space by emphasising all line elements. Japanese cypress is used for the display shelves, with line lighting under the shelves have both functional and spatial effects. Large panels are used to create partitions for customers having a fitting, while specially-woven kimono upholstery and weaving loom-inspired wire-works cover the ceiling. Wood, Japanese paper, fabric and sharp line lighting make the space a fusion of Japanese tradition and futuristic essence.
The upper-light fittings in the ceiling wire-works recall the pattern and texture of Nishijin-ori (a traditional kimono fabric from Kyoto) across the entire ceiling. A stage in the centre of shop features large sliding partitions – painted by an artisan – which provide a background for a display or can be slid into place to create a fitting area.

Project Axial Symphony, Shenzhen

Manipulating axes is the point of departure of this design. Within each functional space, furniture and fixtures are located on an axis that is projected from the most important spatial elements of that zone. The arrangement keeps the inhabitant, physically or visually, always oriented to the centre of the various spaces. In another word, the person is always the epicenter of a space, rather than subjugated by it.

Company Ministry of Design
Project The Club
Location Singapore
Floor area 1,950 sq-m
Project designers Colin Seah, Kevin Leong, Joyce Van Saane, Cheryl Lum, Don Castaneda, Bryan Law, Danis Sie, Roberto Rivera, Lolleth Alejandro
The Club is a high-design boutique hotel offering in Singapore’s Club Street conservation area, with 22 rooms, a rooftop skybar with alfresco deck and a lobby reception on the ground floor. Conceptualising The Club’s branding, Ministry of Design (MOD) orchestrated a unified vision to all related collateral, signage and spatial environments.
Searching to ground the hotel in the context of Singapore as well as the historically-rich conservation area of Club Street and Ann Siang Hill, MOD drew its inspiration from two sources. The first is Singapore’s colonial past, which is referenced through modern tongue-in-cheek art installations such as a larger-than-life statue of Raffles with his head in the clouds, as well as key furniture pieces and artifacts.
The second inspiration came from the area’s popularity as a remittance centre for turn-of-the century Chinese immigrants, where hard-earned money and letters were sent back to the homeland. MOD created features that hint of this legacy in the rooms of The Club.
Located on Ann Siang Hill in Singapore, the old building used to be a private residence for the Yee family for 60 years before it was turned into an office building for Batey Advertising in 1991. As a boutique hotel, MOD retained the façade and all its colonial details and internally created 22 guestrooms, F&B spaces and a lobby.
All rooms combine traditional colonial design-inspired elements with modern detailing, attitude and creature comforts. Unique layouts together with tailored artwork make each room distinct. Guests can customise the lighting scheme in their rooms, in hues of blue, green, pink or white, with the high-tech LED lighting system.
