Project Treeum, a house for masonry wall trees
Project leader s Frankie, Wong Shun Yin
Hong Kong’s rapid redevelopment tends to ignore the balance of its natural heritage; more than 12,000 trees have been cut down in just four years due to urban development. Focusing on the Wanchai district with its significant historical heritage but little public open space for people to relax, Frankie Wong’s Treeum – a contraction of the words ‘tree’ and museum’ – proposes an escape from the concrete urban jungle.
A site close to the Hopewell Centre was selected, with more than 500 masonry wall trees, of which 12 are particularly valuable. The main focus point is an old building, renovated to become a tree resource centre and gallery, where displays made of mirrors and transparent materials provide further views of the masonry wall and its trees. The space was opened up and layers of partitions and surfaces introduced to provide visitors different viewing angles.

Project Horizonscape
Horizonscape is cross-bay link design that minimises the visual blockage of civil structural and tries to integrate the infrastructure into the urban landscape. It starts from the eastern end of Tseung Kwan O to the western end of the future Lam Tin tunnel, with two major support legs sited on islands in the bay. Horizonscape provides linkage for both pedestrians and vehicles via double-layered zoning. Landscaping in both zones for sustainability as well as providing an new urban green experience aims to break the rule of infrastructure as purely structural.
