Perspective Awards 2011 - INTERIOR DESIGN (PROFESSIONAL)

Bar Or Restaurant

TROPHY

Company KLID (Kris Lin Interior Design)
Project Haneda Japanese Restaurant
Location Fuzhou, China
Project leader Kris Lin
Project designers Anda Yang

Haneda was conceived as a venue in which the quiet luxury and elegance of the interior design would complement its high-end cuisine to create the perfect combination of vision and taste, referencing the concept of yin and yang.

Spanning 6,000 sq-ft and boasting 16ft-high ceilings, the restaurant's interiors use very simple materials: steel, cement, laminated wood, gray stone flooring sourced from Jerusalem. Spaces are separated by steel tubing of varying lengths and welded together, to denote the different areas for the two VIP rooms. Further dividers of dark walnut wood add warmth to the main dining area.

At the entrance to the restaurant, guests are greeted by a rock sculpture through which water trickles, as well as steel candleholders inspired by Asian design elements. In the dining room, high-back chairs and shiny wood-top tables with geometric metal bases create different textures. Cement walls are polished in certain parts and left raw in others, while steel elements on the ceiling combine with light fixtures to lend an industrial edge to the space.

TROPHY

Company Asylum
Project Johnnie Walker House
Location Sinan Mansion, Shanghai, China
Project leader Chris Lee
Project designers Cara Ang, Cherin Tan, Dymitr Malcew

Collaborating with creative agency Love, the Johnnie Walker House is an experiential, interactive space created to host 'Whisky Conversations'. Housed in the three-storey Sinan Mansion, located in the French concession of Shanghai, the space was conceived with the intent to engage and advocate loyalty among premium whisky drinkers.

The concept incorporates the history of Johnnie Walker and whisky knowledge alongside essential elements and building blocks of whisky into the spatial design. Based on the central theme 'Whisky Conversations', the space was designed in which multiple layered conversations are woven into the Johnnie Walker journey, complemented by graphic designs from Love.

Upon stepping into the Johnnie Walker House, raw ingredients as malt and peat are lined again the wall of the entrance, accompanied by copper lamps modelled after whisky stills. In the corridor, angled wooden floor strips resonate with the slanted label on the brand's bottle, along with a curved constellation wall.

A whisky glass ceiling installation on the second level leads to a contemporary faceted copper bar with hanging vintage decanters. Juxtaposing distinctive elements found in whisky-making alongside innovative fixtures, the Johnnie Walker House is not a typical space, but a state-of-the-art experiential centre that unveils the legacy of the brand.

TROPHY

Company Hirsch Bedner Associates
Project Siam Kempinsky
Location Bangkok, Thailand
Project leader Ian Carr, Connie Puar, Paula O' Callaghan
Project designers HBA Singapore office, project manager Page Kirkland

Placing Thailand's cultural heritage into Bangkok in an impressive and reinvigorated way was of prime importance to the owners, resulting in a design statement redefining the meaning of tradition in Bangkok, transcending mere style and trends with a quality and permanence typically unseen in commercial properties.

By starting with all that is culturally, historically and artistically Thai, the designers translated the shapes, forms, icons and colours of old Thailand into a new aesthetic. The lobby is punctuated with soaring vertical lines created by 15m columns clad in pale stone. Its ceiling is embossed in receding concentric steps, enhancing the sense of unlimited space. Floor-to-ceiling windows make the lushness of the gardens as much part of the design as the dramatically scaled, conical bronze scones that adorn the columns.

The light in guestrooms is a refreshing palette with a bright, resort-like feel. Signature Thai restaurant Sra Bua (Lily Pond) features customdesigned Thai silk panels with heavily articulated timber walls, while the high-ceilinged Whiskey Bar is a masculine space with a dramatic marble fireplace set in wood-panelled walls.

TROPHY

Company Hirsch Bedner Associates
Project Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund
Location Shanghai, China
Project leader Ian Carr, Connie Puar, Paula O' Callaghan
Project designers HBA Singapore office team, HBA onsite coordinators and one outsourced site coordinator in Shanghai

Waldorf Astoria Shanghai On The Bund was originally an English Renaissance-style club completed in 1911. The designer was engaged to reenvision, restore, and elevate this grand heritage building into the Waldorf Astoria Club, creating an interior worthy of its namesake.

The team applied its joint expertise in historical restoration and in designing elegant interior architectures to transform a derelict building into a pristine and glittering destination that harmonises period authenticity with ultra-luxury. The result is an authentic space, true to yet far exceeding the original, and worthy of the Waldorf Astoria name.

The interior was adorned with period furniture and fittings, in jewel-tone fabrics, rich with tassels and trimming. The chandelier in the heritage skylight was removed to enhance the strong character of the space.

The Long Bar was recreated to original specifications, from dark timber panelling and white marble counter to rich, dark masculine furniture. The most intentionally romantic space in the heritage building, The Grand Ballroom is bathed in light by heritage-inspired crystal chandeliers while retaining its original warm, dark wood wainscoting, buff-painted plaster walls and intricate ceiling and wall mouldings.
