Best Architectural Project

Winner

Beijing Publishing House
Studio Pei-Zhu

Judges Comment (John Pauline):
A highly original insertion within the urban fabric of Beijing. The structure of an existing building has been re-defined both aesthetically and functionally. Although the environmental performance of the final scheme may not be excellent, the choice to update the existing building would be of environmental is of environmental benefit awhile also being cost effective. The aesthetics and form of the building are simultaneously bold and ephemeral.

Certifcate Of Excellence

Yanlord Peninsula
RMJM Hong Kong Ltd

Judges Comment (John Pauline):
A very well executed terrace development. The response to the site is appropriate and sensitive to local history and vernacular. The use of materials is balanced and varied. With water as a strong driver, the terraces could perhaps have engaged more directly with the water canals and features.

Best Commercial Office
Winner

Ogilvy & Mather
M Moser Associates

Judges Comment (Colin Seah):
The clear winner of all the projects, this excels in creating an experience that delights, surprises, and serves. It captured the spirit of the client in a measured way, the ’carnival’ theme could have gone so terribly wrong but no so here… A real success.

Highlights cited include – Interactivity between zones is very playful and strong. Also excellent harnessing of exterior lights and views. Spatial planning device of stair and catwalk is very successful and dramatic, utilizing the existing space well. Materials choices complement the ‘carnival’ theme well, never descending into kitsch A great foil and backdrop to the key carnival features.

Sales Office in Guangzhou
One Plus Partnership Ltd

Judges Comment (Colin Seah):
Sophisticated and modern, yet tinged with Oriental traditions. Innovative use of pattern device as decoration and furniture (the movement away from reliance of pure decoration is good). Spatial planning well executed. Could be a bit more restrained, effect is bordering on over powering.

Best Hospitality and Entertainment
Winner

Noodle Plus Japanese Noodle Flagship Store
Alan Chan Design Co.

Judges Comment (Takaharu Tezuka):
Nothing is too ostentatious yet it is clear enough to make everyone understand the concept. The beauty of the project is that every detail is designed to represent the culture of the noodles served in the restaurant.

Fairwood Generation II

This food restaurant has nothing to do with feeling of the instantaneity that comes along with fast food; rather it represent the lightness and beauty of the new generation. The oneness of the space is also impressive.

It successfully creates a unique human space with the intelligent use of simple and moderate spaces and materials. The Cave Living of Exception
84000 Communications

Judges Comment (Haewon Shin):
This project was selected among many other strong entries because of following reasons. First, the originality of the project in the context of Fashion retail design. The way the recycled material was used in a new context that brings a new awareness and approach to interior design of a fashion brand. The design is staged as an experimental installation with the use of conventional found materials. Lastly, the layout of the store is set in simple space that brings about flow but each section of space is articulated creating a diverse setting for clothes to be displayed

Best Product
Winner

One Pair of a Hand — Spiral Scarf
Sin Sin Fine Art Ltd

Judges Comment (Mike LaVign):
Spiral Scarf by Sin Sin was my favorite for both its beauty and also for demonstrating a more holistic view of sustainability. Sustainability is a cultural, economic, and environmental issue when it's fully considered. Most products seek to address sustainability only though what materials or methods can be easily copy/pasted into an existing product design and production process. Sin Sin made efforts to create a product that benefits the wearer with beauty, economically benefits the communities responsible for its production, and culturally benefits those communities by practicing traditional crafts for a contemporary product.

Certifcate Of Excellence

Belonging
Akin Design

Judges Comment (Mike LaVign):
The Belonging chair by Akin Design was one of the few entries that was inspired to addresses an unmet human need, and it was surprising to find innovation in the usability of a chair. Of course we need a place to put our stuff, and Akin's solution remains visually light, instead of the storage making the design bulky. In contrast to solving a need, most contemporary chairs strive towards sculpture, rendering them into objects that sometimes force people and environments to kneel for them rather than encourage sitting. The Belonging chair looks inhabitable and comfortable. Its materials and form are approachable, warm, and the chair feels as if constructed by human hands.

Judges Comment (Jason Yung, Caroline Ma, Russell Law,

Strong concept, nice graphics to go with the overall concept, very impressive and professional. Could improve the presentation and form of the residential block.

Poetic project that relates well to the context, though a more in depth understanding of astrological events could be brought in Additionally vernacular style could have been explored and demonstrate using the context objects.

Project: Tai Pak Aquatel
Institution:
Caritas Bianchi College of Careers
Ngai Pan Cheung

Judges Comment (Jason Yung, Caroline Ma, Russell Law,
Eddy Yip):
Very good idea and design concept but the execution is problematic.

The understanding of its historical context and the programmatic change is exciting. The scale of the new design is a little too big to handle but some of the spaces are very challenging.
