Ninus Anusapati: Shadow

Hong Kong gallery Sin Sin Fine Art will be hosting an exhibition of works by renowned Indonesian artist Anusapati from 8 March to 8 April.

'Shadow', his Hong Kong debut exhibition, will feature charcoal on paper drawings and three-dimensional objects. The drawings depict impressions of silhouettes or shadows of trees and plants. Anusapati’s use of the media of charcoal on paper is not based solely on aesthetic considerations. Both paper and charcoal come from the same source: trees. The three-dimensional objects are also made of natural, organic materials such as paper, books, leaves and seeds – based on the same grounding concerns about trees, nature and our environment. Together, they invite us to reflect and reconsider our own part and actions in our environment.

Anusapati was born in Solo (Surakarta), Indonesia. He lives and works in Yogyakarta. A graduate of Pratt Institute's School of Art and Design, Anusapati has exhibited internationally in Singapore, Japan, India, Australia, USA, Germany, The Netherlands, Italy, Russia, Turkey and South Africa.

New Rimadesio showroom

Located on Milan's via Visconti di Modrone and designed by Giuseppe Bavuso, the new 800 sq.m Rimadesio flagship store opened during the recent Furniture Fair.

Presenting the collection in a unique setting, designed exclusively for the design week, the new space proved a hit with professionals and design fans alike for whom it served as both a display window and a meeting place at the same time.

LALIQUE introduces new interiors collection.

Bridging the gap between vintage and contemporary, LALIQUE’s recently introduced range of Art Deco inspired furniture, interior accessories and bed linens, embody the craftsmenship for which the brand is renowned. The collection of handcrafted pieces is a collaboration of internationally renowned designers, Lady Tina Green and Pietro Mingarelli, and drawing on original designs by Rene Lalique, features characteristic motifs across the entire soft furnishing and furniture collection.

Can architecture make a difference?

Organised by Asia Design Forum, co-presented by Asia Society Hong Kong Center and AIA Hong Kong and curated by architect Marisa Yiu, founding partner of ESKYIU and assistant professor at CUHK, ‘Architecture: Between Beauty & Ethics’ saw more than 200 guests in attendance.

Initiated by ADF, the Design Roulette format is unique, with Speaker #1 introducing Speaker #2, who shows five images in five minutes with a short presentation. This is repeated again with the next speaker. The result was a lively, 80-minute discussion that flowed in unpredictable directions.

Rocco Yim of Rocco Design Architects Hong Kong noted that “architecture is not an art. It is an art of problem-solving”, a point which was challenged by Hitoshi Abe, chair of the department of architecture and urban design at UCLA, saying that art and architecture are not in opposition but are, in fact, supportive of each other.

David Gianotten, partner in charge of OMA’s Hong Kong office, noted that “only eight per cent of the world’s buildings are designed by architects” and wondered how much impact architects have on pressing social issues.

Merely providing a service, though, is not enough, noted Shideh Shaygan of Shaygan Architects, pointing out that while the enormous housing estates in Hong Kong meet basic needs, they are in no way attractive.

The event ended with an unexpected highlight from the audience and a discussion that continued into the evening.

MEGAMAN® lights up new designer fashion complex in Hong Kong's Central district

An exciting new shopping experience in the heart of Hong Kong's financial and commercial district, Central, is turning heads thanks to its array of designer stores, lit with the latest in highly energy efficient MEGAMAN® lamp technology.

CENTRAL/CENTRAL, a retail concept developed by GRI, Asia's leading international apparel and accessories brand-management and retail-distribution company, brings together the company's portfolio of brands under one roof for the first time. Names in the 18,000 square feet retail space include Anne Klein New York, Carolinna Espinosa, Easy Spirit, EQ:IQ, Joan & David, Karen Millen, Nine West and Steve Madden . Thanks to the use of MEGAMAN® LED reflector technology, the end result is not only the ultimate in visual lighting drama, but in energy savings as well with 105,090 kWh saved in energy consumption and 73,563 kg in CO2 emissions per year.

To create this stylish mall, GRI commissioned Steve Leung Designers Ltd to design a flowing space that accommodated each brand's outlet with fluidity, but also allowing for individual expression. Working alongside renowned lighting designer, Tino Kwan, founder of Tino Kwan Lighting Consultants, the result is a stunning white shopping canvas within which each 'art collection', or brand, is presented.

While the design of each of the stores aims to offer the maximum flexibility for merchandising, the lighting technology used throughout has been chosen with visual impact, customer comfort and energy efficiency in mind. Tino Kwan chose to use MEGAMAN® LED Reflector Technology due to the lighting performance of the lamps, the variety of directional beam angles available and the sustainable credentials of MEGAMAN® as a company.

Colourliving introduces Armani/Roca to Hong Kong

Colourliving recently celebrated the official launch of the cutting-edge, stylish new bathroom concept from Giorgio Armani and Roca in Hong Kong.

World leaders in their own fields of business, Armani and Roca combined their experience and knowledge back in 2010 to develop a new and exclusive bathroom space, defined by luxury, innovation and design.

The result of this collaboration is an innovative concept that integrates practicality and pleasure. Advanced technological solutions combine with elegance and sophistication in wall and floor coatings, ceiling lighting, bathroom fittings, accessories and everything that the bathroom space needs.

For the first time, the bathroom space is shaped in the form of an island, integrating all essential elements into one singular style, brought together and divided into four modular zones: a wellness bath area, beauty area, shower area and basic needs area. These are clearly differentiated via a sophisticated system of glass partitions, which feature an optional opaqueness mechanism that allows the user to control the degree of intimacy in each of the different areas.

20 years and 200km later
Clestra celebrates its 20th anniversary in Hong Kong

Clestra Hong Kong celebrated its 20th anniversary of business in Hong Kong in early December 2011, with a rooftop party at Wooloomooloo in Wanchai. Together with friends, customers and suppliers, everyone was able to enjoy the view of a skyline that has changed enormously over the past 20 years.

In those same 20 years, Clestra has grown from a small office of two to the mature company it is today, and has supplied and installed more than 200km of its stylish, European-designed partitioning, and 300,00 sq-m of ceilings for some of Hong Kong's landmark projects, including the Cathay Pacific and DragonAir headquarters in 1997 and, more recently, the Central Government Complex, Tamar.

The Clestra product is renowned for its durability, which ultimately means a cost-saving for the client and less landfill for Hong Kong. Even after many years in service, partitioning can be relocated for use in a different configuration, or even a new location.

In his welcome speech, Clestra managing director Paul Levy acknowledged that the 20 years had not been as easy as they could have been: 'We survived the Asian crisis in 1997, SARS in 2003 and, more recently in 2008, the sub-prime crisis, where we suffered the closure of one of our largest customers at that time – but 'ce qui ne nous tue pas renforce' – 'what does not kill you makes you stronger'.'
