The Zuri Zanzibar marks the opening of the latest Design Hotel for the African continent

The Zuri Zanzibar by Design Hotels has opened on a 300m-long stretch of private coast on the Tanzanian archipelago. The upscale establishment, which was fully launched in September, features seven sunset-facing restaurants and bars, an infinity pool, a water sports centre, a spice garden and a spa and wellness programme.themed-slideshow-zuri-zanzibar-10The property takes its name from the Swahili word for 'beautiful' and has been designed to create a clustered village atmosphere. The 55 thatched bungalows and villas were conceived by London- and Prague-based firm Jestico & Whiles. The villas peek out from curtains of greenery and are positioned across an area of 32ha so that each has ocean or garden views.

At every point of the process, the team behind the holistic property took ecological considerations and responsible tourism as the guiding principle. This means not only high-end respite, but a stay deeply connected to its surroundings and local community. And now with the addition of the Maua Wellness program, guests will benefit from an open-air gym and training facility, sunrise and sunset yoga, tailored fitness programming, and a meditation and massage area. The Zuri Zanzibarthemed-slideshow-zuri-zanzibar-05
