Hong Kong-based firm Liquid Interiors has designed an apartment on Hollywood Road that may be the most eco-friendly home in the region

The old 400 sq-m apartment located in the heart of Central has been transformed by the practice into a cozy haven full of high-tech features. By incorporating a range of smart elements, such as low VOC materials, energy-efficient lighting and purification systems for air and water, the home is now a healthy living environment for the pilot owner. Many of the systems included in the home can be accessed via smartphone, meaning that the owner can constantly access data relating to the home’s energy usage or set various functions from afar.

Key requests from the client included functions that allowed him to have a deep sleep cycle because of his job’s unusual hours. For this, the firm installed full blackout curtains along with circadian lighting in the flooring from the bedroom to the bathroom so that, even if he needs to get up in the night, his sleep cycle is not too disturbed. The client also wanted the space to appear bigger so that he could easily entertain. For this, an extendable kitchen table and hideaway appliances were included, along with seating on the rooftop that is able to be folded away.

Also on the rooftop, a heat pump and solar water heater allow the home to utilise renewable energy. The inclusion of a small green wall in this area acts as a visual feature, but also allows the client to grow his own organic produce.

“In the last few years, the trend of new developments globally are that flats are getting smaller and smaller and more expensive, so maximum use and transformability for a small ecological footprint is more valuable today than ever before,” notes Rowena Gonzalez, CEO of Liquid Interiors.
