Laying low in the quiet neighbourhood of Tin Hau in Hong Kong, Hip Cellar excites wine lovers more than any ordinary cellar with its exclusive, refined setting
Adjoining the hustle and bustle of Causeway Bay, the quiet yet energetic Tin Hau district has gradually become a secret hotspot for gastronomes and wine-lovers, with numerous exciting restaurants blossoming in the area. Hip Cellar, a refined merger of wine cellar and restaurant, is one of the neighbourhood’s latest additions, offering a private and intimate dining experience aiming to please epicures.
Tucked away in a secluded corner near Watson Road, Hip Cellar covers 12,000 sq-ft and features 1,155 individual cellars, each with precisely controlled temperature and humidity. Rather than providing a conventional storage space, Hip Cellar has opted to create a platform for wine-lovers to share their treasured bottles as well as to indulge in haute cuisine in utmost privacy.
Hip Cellar also comprises a lounge with sweeping views of Victoria Harbour, along with several collectors’ rooms, a Director’s Room and three VIP rooms with themes directed by celebrity chef Esther Sham from Ta Pantry. Designed by renowned local architect and interior designer Steve Leung, who previously helped create other notable culinary sensations in Hong Kong such as Mango Tree and Inakaya, the nostalgic interiors are influenced by French and British designs to result in a sophisticated atmosphere reminiscent of an English castle, with a cosy ambience designed by lighting specialist Tino Kwan.
Flanked by white archaistic wooden doors and textured grey wallpaper on both sides, the feature wall in the lift lobby features various wine boxes patterns, creating an illusion of walking into the cellar of a traditional manor house. From here, the door on the left hand side leads one into the reception area, where big wooden barrels become reception desks and vintage wine boxes showcase the timeless beauty of old Europe.
