The interior design of The Portman Ritz-Carlton Shanghai follows the hotel’s theme of “Ye Shanghai,” evoking historical references to Shanghai as a melting pot of different cultures from the east and the west, and developing a cosmopolitan character unique to its local milieu. Space planning of the renovation of the suites was particularly challenging owing to the existence of pipe and duct chases which had to be retained not only to save on construction costs but also to minimize the disturbance to hotel operations during construction.
