    Sureño is a Mediterranean restaurant whose concept centers on the idea of the hearth (the oven), the family (the dining room), the food & wine (the libations) and the landscape (the sunken garden)…while its materiality, patterns and coloring evoke memories of the Mediterranean Sea and the bounty of that land. ...Collapse

    Vertical patterned raw concrete and low-slung pools define the ‘thickened walls’ of Sureño, while the ebonized oak floors and hand-applied Venetian plaster ceilings define the voids. Very much a separation of public and semi-public…the Lounge, Bar, Pizza Kitchen, Semi-PDR and Wine Room all occupy the poché of these ‘walls’. Section cuts are emphasized by blackened bronze and the interiors are ‘carved out’ in a marine blue plaster, olive oil colored glass, light ebonized oak millwork and hand-painted olive patterns contrasting their warmth with the coolness outside. The main dining room ceiling is subtle in how it takes what is a compressed basement and lifts upward towards the windows, allowing light to stream across it and into the dining room. The wood and marble banquettes allow the dining room to be segmented in an elegant way, while still allowing it to feel both familial and convivial…and focused on the hearth. ...Collapse
