To make a multi-purpose complex a distinctive, modern Beijing landmark both functional and aesthetically pleasing, despite size limitations. Home to a retail mall, grade A office space and a hotel, harmony was achieved between the separate sections in all buildings in the complex by using clean, engaging geometric forms and lines, with a restricted material and colour palette. Above the retail section, a special food and beverage block is enclosed entirely by horizontal glass fins lit by purple LED light strips. A variety of elements necessary for a multi-purpose complex, including run-in/out, drop-off and pick-up spaces, had to be incorporated into the design, while architects also had to operate under size and depth restrictions. Located on a 650m shop front strip, only 40m deep, designing the complex was extremely challenging, but provided an opportunity for a truly iconic development. ...Collapse
