The Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) will celebrate its 60th anniversary with an exhibition showcasing architects’ artwork next month

HKIA is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, and has held a range of activities and exhibitions throughout the city and abroad to mark the occasion. In September, the institute will present the spotlight event: REVEAL 2 Exhibition- For the City. For the Community. + − × ÷  at ArtisTree, Taikoo Place.

The exhibition aims at showcasing the close ties between architects and the community, and 90 HKIA members will showcase their work through different mediums. HKIA organised the first REVEAL Exhibition in 2013 and featured the artwork of nearly 80 members of HKIA, attracting more than 17,000 visitors during the period.

“This year’s exhibition is a great opportunity for us to promote the idea that architecture is for the people, and the city is constructed with the people,” Corrin Chan, chairman of the organising committee of REVEAL 2 exhibition, comments. “In a city where buildings are regarded as commodity, the importance of architects may not be seen by the people, but we have to re-build trust for the public.”

The exhibition will be divided into three areas: Inside ArtisTree, Art Room and Outside ArtisTree, a new area of this year’s event, to display different forms and sizes of artwork. Free seminars, movie shows and workshops will be scheduled for the public as well.

“The key challenge is that REVEAL 2 is a campaign rather than an art exhibition. We set aside our role as a designer but act as a listener, a facilitator or a collaborator to understand, interact and engage with the community,” notes Tony Ip, leader of the curatorial team of the REVEAL 2 exhibition.

The opening ceremony will take place on 9 September, and will be officiated by Carrie Lam, Chief Secretary for Administration of the HKSAR government. Exhibitions will kick-off on the following day until 7 October.

“We have been holding or participating various activities for the 60th anniversary of HKIA, including the ongoing La Biennale di Venezia and HKIA Tram Tour. We have received good feedback from the public and participants of the Biennale. We hope that all activities launched can help promote HKIA to all sectors of the society,” says Vincent Ng, president of HKIA.
