HKIA Cross-Strait Architectural Design Symposium and Awards 2017 gathers design professionals from across the region

The Hong Kong Institute of Architects Cross-Strait Architectural Design Symposium and Awards (CADSA) 2017 once again generated enthusiastic debate about trends in architecture and the challenges ahead, drawing key players from the Greater China region.

The event, held on June 17 at the JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong, aimed to facilitate debate among eminent architects from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau and Mainland China; it also recognised their work over the past decade.

With the theme Speed, Density and Diversity — Cross-Strait Architecture, the symposium provided a lively platform. Keynote speeches were given by some big industry names, including Marvin Chen, President, The Hong Kong Institute of Architects; Zhong Jishou, Secretary General, Architectural Society of China; and Professor Ole Gustavsen, Rector, Oslo School of Architecture and Design. Panellists were invited to join in to share their insights.

"The Cross-Strait Architectural Design Symposium this year featured prominent architects and scholars from different regions who shared their insights on the challenges and opportunities facing future architectural projects in the cross-strait region, examined current situations and possible solutions, and explored the potential of diversified designs in accommodating the needs of different users in the community," said Benny Chan Chak-bun, Chairman of the Symposium Committee, CADSA 2017.

The night concluded with the awards ceremony, celebrating design excellence that contributes to better living conditions, economic advancement and a positive social impact; also recognised was the importance of building a body of knowledge to achieve these ends. The Gold, Silver and Merit Award winners in the Professional category were selected from about 200 nominations, while a new Student Category recognised Gold, Silver and Bronze Award winners, selected from some 100 nominations.

The HKIA will hold a public exhibition to showcase the winning architectural design projects of the symposium's Gold, Silver, Bronze and Merit Awards to raise public awareness about outstanding architectural projects.
